Smith and deGrom Lead Rangers to Solid Victory Over St. Louis

|

The Texas Rangers took a firm step toward breaking out of their slump, and they did so with the help of two key players: Josh Smith and Jacob deGrom. With a standout offensive performance from Smith, who drove in four runs, and consistent dominance from the mound by deGrom, the Texas team convincingly defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 8-1 on Sunday to clinch the series at home.

The win not only provided a welcome respite for the Rangers, who had been struggling in recent weeks, but also marked their first series win since mid-May, when they swept Colorado. The result left Texas with a 29-31 record, while the Cardinals fell to 33-26.

Josh Smith Steals the Spotlight

If there was one player who changed the course of the game from the start, it was Josh Smith. The infielder matched his career high by driving in four runs, thanks to a two-on double and a two-run homer in the eighth inning. It was his second time this season driving in that many runs in a single game.

Smith took advantage of an Erick Fedde changeup in the second inning to blast a ball into the left-field corner, bringing home Marcus Semien and another teammate. Later in the eighth, he struck again with a home run to right field, capping a five-run inning that sealed the victory for the Rangers.

With his performance, Smith was not only key to winning the game, but he continues to demonstrate his importance to a team looking for more stability in its offense.

DeGrom Turns in Another Strong Outing

Jacob deGrom continues to deliver as the ace the Rangers need. The right-hander pitched six full innings, allowing just one run on four hits and three walks, while striking out four. It was his eighth consecutive start in which he allowed two or fewer runs, cementing himself as a reliable addition to the rotation.

Although he didn't have a spectacular outing in terms of strikeouts, deGrom was effective, controlling the pace of the game and preventing St. Louis from having significant rallies. His dominance was such that the Cardinals only managed to score in the first inning, and from then on, they were completely silenced.

The former Met improves to 5-2 on the season, and his consistency has been a bright spot for a team desperately in need of positive results.

The Cardinals Found No Answers

St. Louis started the game with an early spark, scoring its only run thanks to a walk by Lars Nootbaar and an RBI single by Willson Contreras. But after that, its offense completely shut down. The team finished with just four hits in the entire game and was outscored in every aspect by Texas.

Cardinals starter Erick Fedde didn't have a bad outing: he pitched six innings, allowing just two runs. However, his team didn't back him up offensively. With this loss, the Cardinals have lost only their second series in their last 11 attempts, proving they're still competitive, but can't afford these kinds of lapses if they want to stay in the mix.

Furthermore, the Cardinals have a poor record against Texas in the regular season. Their winning percentage against the Rangers is just .333, the lowest against any franchise. While they have fond memories of the 2011 World Series, they were clearly outclassed this time around.

Semien Recovers His Rhythm

Another positive note for the Rangers was the performance of Marcus Semien. The second baseman had two hits and two walks in the game, totaling seven hits in the series.
Thanks to this strong performance, he managed to raise his batting average from .173 to .201, a figure he had not reached since the opening day of the season.

His second-inning single was key to starting the comeback and sparked Texas's solid lead. When Semien is in rhythm, the Rangers' offense becomes much more dangerous.

With this result, the Rangers regain confidence just in time for a tough nine-game road trip. Tyler Mahle will be in charge of opening the next series in Tampa Bay, where Texas will look to maintain its hot streak in the MLB .

The Cardinals, meanwhile, will return to action Tuesday when they face the Kansas City Royals in the so-called "I-70 Series," with Andre Pallante scheduled to start.

Both teams have different paths to travel, but this game showed that the Rangers still have the tools to compete at the highest level when their key pieces respond.
