FC Barcelona put the finishing touch to a brilliant season with a resounding victory over Athletic Club at San Mamés. In a festive atmosphere, with the locals celebrating their qualification to the Champions League and bidding farewell to a legend like Oscar de Marcos, Hansi Flick's team was effective, serene and lethal. Robert Lewandowski, with two goals in just three minutes, was the key figure of the match, while Dani Olmo scored from the penalty spot in the final moments.
A Beginning With the Soul of an Ending
Although there was nothing at stake in the table for either team, the match began with intensity, pace and the ambition of those who do not want to say goodbye without giving their all. Athletic, boosted by their fans and with the motivation of having closed an outstanding season, came out determined to make the champions uncomfortable.
Nico Williams was the first to make a warning. Fast, daring, electric, he had the chance to open the scoring, but his aim was not up to his physical display. Unai Gómez even scored, although the goal was disallowed for a millimetric offside. The crowd roared, the team pushed, but then Robert Lewandowski appeared.
In a matter of three minutes, the Polish striker put out the local fire with two textbook actions. First, he received a pass filtered by Fermín and classily chipped the ball over Unai Simón. Then, he took advantage of a bad clearance after a corner to head the ball into the six-yard box. Without needing to dominate, Barça were already leading 0-2. And the match, although with a lot to play for, was already on track.
Athletic Insists, Barça Resists
Despite the blow to their morale, Ernesto Valverde's team did not give up. Maroan Sannadi had two clear chances to close the gap, but failed to finish well. The lack of accuracy was the common denominator in the home team's attempts. Nico Williams, very active, overflowed with ease, but could not find the net.
At the other end, Barça took things slowly. They looked for long possessions, slowed the pace and tried to avoid risks. Lamine Yamal joined the attack with some dangerous runs, while Iñaki Peña - a starter five months later - kept a clean sheet, including a great intervention to prevent an own goal by Pau Cubarsí.
The first half ended with a mixture of frustration and excitement at San Mamés. Barça had been convincing, yes, but Athletic had not been inferior in play. They only lacked the goal.
The Second Half: Missed Opportunities And Emotional Farewells
The second half started as the first half ended: with a comfortable Barça, but without letting their guard down, and an insistent Athletic, although imprecise. Lewandowski had the clearest chance to complete his hat-trick after a great cross from Balde, but this time his shot went over the crossbar. It was the last clear chance for the '9', who finished the season with 27 goals, although he was unable to catch up with Kylian Mbappé in the fight for the Pichichi.
The game opened up a bit more in the final stretch. Nico Williams tried his luck again, this time with a great individual action that ended in a cross shot, and Sannadi missed another clear opportunity. On the Barça side, Lamine Yamal also had chances that he failed to convert, one of them saved by a firm Unai Simón.
With just a few minutes left, the tribute to Óscar de Marcos took all the applause. The defender, who is retiring after 16 seasons in Athletic's first team, received a standing ovation from the entire stadium. His substitution was an emotional moment, with all of San Mames on its feet, recognizing the dedication of one of its great symbols.

Final Goal, Excitement and End of Party
In stoppage time, a foul inside the area by Yuri Berchiche on Dani Olmo was awarded a penalty. Olmo himself took the responsibility and made the final score 0-3. A symbolic closure for a Barça that knew how to be lethal without having to play a brilliant game.
The result was fair for what both teams offered: Barça knew how to take their chances and control the pace, while Athletic tried without luck and left with their heads held high. Beyond the scoreboard, it was an afternoon of mixed emotions: the joy of the champions, the farewell of an idol and the promise that both teams will continue to be protagonists next season.
With this victory, Barça not only closed their season with a prestigious win, but also confirmed the good moment they are experiencing under Hansi Flick. A season that began with doubts, but has ended with a title and very positive feelings. Now, with their minds set on the future, the azulgranas are bidding farewell to the 2024/2025 season in style.
