FC Metz returned to Ligue 1 and did so with authority, coming back from an intense series against Stade de Reims with a 3-1 away win that sealed a 4-2 aggregate win in the play-offs. Just one season removed from relegation, the Lorraine-based club showed character and made the most of their chances in a duel where the tension was palpable from the first minute to the final whistle.
For their part, Reims had a bitter week. After losing in the final of the Coupe de France, the team failed to maintain its status and will join Saint-Étienne and Montpellier in relegation to Ligue 2. The contrast between the two realities could not be clearer: while some celebrate their return to the elite, others lament a season that got out of hand at the worst possible time.
Reims Strikes First, But Can't Hold On
In a match that seemed to be leaning towards Reims, the illusion of permanence gained momentum with a goal from young Malian Ange Tia. Just 18 years old, the striker took advantage of an opportunity in the 57th minute to open the scoring and put his team back ahead in the series. With that goal, Reims seemed to be on the verge of salvation in front of their home crowd at the Auguste Delaune stadium.
The team coached by Samba Diawara showed solidity for much of the match. Despite not completely dominating, they managed to stop Metz's offensive attempts and manage the pace of the game with some comfort. But as has been the case throughout the season, maintaining concentration until the end was again a problem.
In an action that began with high pressure and a quick attacking combination, Matthieu Udol managed to beat the Senegalese goalkeeper Yehvann Diouf to equalize the match. With that goal, Metz forced extra time and unnerved a Reims side that began to feel the weight of the occasion.
Metz Did Not Fail in Overtime
Although the equalizer forced extra time, it was during extra time that Metz showed their true character. The visitors showed a renewed focus, knowing that they were just minutes away from achieving the goal they had set themselves at the start of the campaign: to return to the top flight.
In just four minutes, Metz put the game to bed. First, it was Alpha Touré who, in the 110th minute, took advantage of a great assist from Gauthier Hein to make it 2-1. The move was quick, precise and effective, leaving the home defense with no reaction. Four minutes later, Hein himself sealed the score with a powerful shot to make it 3-1.
That flurry of goals ended up sinking a Reims team that could no longer find an emotional or footballing response. While the visiting players celebrated with their fans, the pain of relegation began to be felt in the stands of the Delaune, a fall that seemed unthinkable just a few weeks ago.
A Continuing and a Breaking Tradition
With this victory, Metz maintains a curious trend that has been repeated in recent years: it has not spent more than one consecutive season in Ligue 2. Since the 2010-11 campaign, the club has oscillated between the elite and the second division, but has always managed to return quickly. Now, along with Lorient and Paris FC - who were promoted outright - Metz is preparing to embark on a new stage in the top flight of French soccer.
For Stade de Reims, it was a different story. The team experienced a season of ups and downs, but the hardest part came at the end. In a matter of days, they went from playing in the final of the Coupe de France to being relegated. The defeat in the play-off against Metz was the final straw in a week to forget.
Neither the individual talent of players like Diouf nor the explosion of youngsters like Tia were enough to sustain a project that fell apart at key moments. The club will now have to rethink its course and rebuild from Ligue 2.

What's Next for Both Clubs
Metz, with their promotion confirmed, are already thinking about next season in Ligue 1. The challenge will be no small one, especially considering the competitiveness of the championship and the need to reinforce their squad to avoid relegation. However, the momentum of this play-off win and the leadership shown at key moments give reason for hope.
For its part, Reims will face a difficult transition process. In addition to the frustration of relegation, the club will have to deal with possible departures, cutbacks and pressure from an environment that expected more. It will be key to define whether Samba Diawara will continue at the helm of the project or whether they will seek a complete overhaul.
With the curtain coming down, the season ends in contrasting fashion for both teams. Metz returns to the elite with pride and merit. Reims, on the other hand, will have to rebuild from the ashes of a week that will go down in their history as one of the toughest in recent years.
