Porto drew with Roma in the UEFA Europa League

|

Estádio Do Dragão was the stage for a thrilling tie between Porto and Roma in the first leg of the UEFA Europa League playoffs. The 1-1 draw leaves the tie open for the second leg, where both teams will play for qualification to the next round. Although the home side were more dominant in the second half, the Italians were able to hold on for a positive result that gives them a slight home advantage.

First half dominated by Roma

Roma started the match with an attacking approach, looking to impose their game from the first minutes. Coach Claudio Ranieri opted to field his best players, with Paulo Dybala and Artem Dovbyk forming an attacking duo that quickly showed their understanding on the pitch.
Together, they were responsible for the best chances in the first half, with Dybala creating constant danger and Dovbyk always looking for space to finish. However, despite the good soccer on display, Roma failed to convert the moves into goals.

Porto, for their part, failed to impose themselves in the first 45 minutes. Although they tried to approach the opponent's area, they did not generate clear scoring opportunities and their ball possession was not enough to hurt the Roman defense.

However, an unfortunate play after 40 minutes changed the course of the match. Dybala, after a collision with Portuguese defender Varela, suffered a knee injury that forced him to leave the field, which was a blow to the Italians.

Despite the absence of their star player, Roma managed to take the lead before the break. After 45 minutes, Saelemaekers' cross from the right was deflected by the Porto defense and, in a fortunate move, the ball reached Zeki Çelik, who did not hesitate to push it into the back of the net, making the score 0-1. The goal gave Roma peace of mind and closed a first half in which the Italians were the most dangerous.

Tie And Pressure From Porto

In the second half, Porto came out with more impetus, looking to level the score. Right at the start of the second half, the home team created a clear chance with a good save by Roman goalkeeper Svilar, who kept out Omorodion's pass. Little by little, Porto took control of the game and, in the 67th minute, achieved their goal of equalizing.

A long pass from Diogo Costa was intercepted by the Roman defense, but the ball ended up at the feet of Pepé, who, after a small collision with the defense, assisted Francisco Moura. The latter, with a powerful shot from outside the area, beat the Roman goalkeeper, who was unable to prevent the goal after a deflection by a defender. The 1-1 draw was a reward for the efforts of the home side, who were beginning to dominate the match.

Roma could not react quickly to the goal and, as the match progressed, things got even more complicated for the Italians. In the 73rd minute, Bryan Cristante received a yellow card for a foul on Vieira.

However, in a subsequent action, the Roma midfielder again committed an infraction, which cost him a second yellow card and expulsion from the match. This left Roma a man down, allowing Porto to increase the pressure in search of victory.

Despite being at a numerical disadvantage, Roma stood firm in defense and resisted Porto's onslaught until the last minute of the match. The home side pressed hard, but Roma's defensive wall, led by a solid Svilar, held the tie until the 95th minute, when the referee blew the final whistle.

A valuable draw for Roma

The 1-1 draw leaves Roma with good prospects for the second leg at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome. Despite the difficulties, including the loss of Dybala and the expulsion of Cristante, the Italians showed their resilience and came out of Portugal alive.

The draw gives them the opportunity to seal their qualification at home, where they will need to show a stronger version to overcome a Porto side that will undoubtedly test their abilities in the return leg.

On the other hand, Porto will have to overcome the pressure of the second leg, where they must score at least one goal to advance. Although possession was higher for the home side, with 57.5% compared to Roma's 42.5%, Sergio Conceicao's team failed to impose their game as on other occasions.

However, the 1-1 draw is a good result for Porto, who will need to improve their performance at home to advance to the next stage of the Europa League.
This draw leaves the tie open, and both teams will play their qualification in the next match. Undoubtedly, a high-voltage clash is expected, with Roma looking to take advantage of their home advantage and Porto fighting for a surprise in the return leg.
