Benfica Advances in Six-Goal Battle Against Monaco

|

Benfica qualified for the round of 16 of the Champions League after a thrilling 3-3 draw against Monaco in Lisbon. In a duel where there was no shortage of excitement, both teams showed their offensive power, but were also exposed by defensive errors that ended up making the difference. Although the visitors were twice up on the scoreboard, the Portuguese team was able to react and found the decisive goal in the final minutes thanks to Kökcü.

The match was a demonstration of how soccer can be unpredictable until the last second. Monaco, with an ambitious approach, put Benfica in trouble on several occasions, but their defensive lapses prevented them from sealing the tie in their favor. Benfica, on the other hand, took advantage of every key opportunity and with their mettle managed to secure their place in the next phase of the competition.

Exchange of blows in the First Half

From the opening whistle, Monaco showed their intention to control the match with high pressing and quick transitions. Although Benfica tried to impose their rhythm, a mistake in Singo's ball outset facilitated the first blow. Pavlidis regained the ball and set up Akturkoglu, who calmly slotted home to put the home side 1-0 up.

Despite this blow, Monaco was quick to respond. With Embolo as a reference in attack, the French team began to generate danger. The reward came minutes later with a great play inside the box. Embolo held the ball up with his physique and set up Minamino for the equalizer, who finished with quality to level the score.

After the 1-1 draw, the French took confidence and came close to turning it around before the break. With Akliouche pulling the strings in midfield and generating options, Monaco gave the impression that they could do damage at any moment. Benfica held on and managed to go into halftime with the score level.

A Second Half of Madness

The intensity picked up in the second half and Monaco struck first. Akliouche was again the protagonist, building a play that culminated in a great finish by Ben Seghir. At 2-1 down, Benfica were on the ropes and forced to react to avoid elimination.

The Portuguese side began to push more insistently, but again found unexpected help in Monaco's defensive frailty. Kehrer committed an unnecessary foul on Aursnes inside the area and the referee did not hesitate to award a penalty. Pavlidis took the ball and with an impeccable shot made it 2-2, bringing Benfica closer to qualification.

Monaco did not give up and in search of a definitive blow, coach Adi Hütter made a key change. He sent on Ilenikhena, who, on his first ball, won a physical duel with Otamendi and beat Trubin with an accurate finish. At 3-2 up, the French were just one goal away from levelling the tie and forcing extra time.

Kökcü's Goal And The Pass To The Round Of 16

When everything seemed to indicate that the game would go to extra time, the story took an unexpected turn. Monaco, who had shown great flashes in attack, once again paid dearly for an oversight in defense. Carreras found space in the box and slipped a precise pass to Kökcü, who, with great determination, struck a powerful shot to make it 3-3.

The Estadio Da Luz exploded with excitement as the Benfica players celebrated the goal that secured their ticket to the next round. Monaco, who had fought until the end, ran out of time to react and had to say goodbye to the competition with a bitter taste.

Benfica showed that at key moments they have the capacity to respond and take advantage of the opponent's mistakes. Although their performance was not perfect, they were able to overcome adversity and sealed their passage with a combative spirit. Now, the Portuguese are waiting to know their next opponent in the round of 16, hoping to continue advancing in Europe's most prestigious tournament.
